What exactly is a "Biblical" worldview?

George Barna defines "biblical worldview" as:
"[B]elieving that absolute moral truths exist; that such truth is defined by the Bible; and firm belief in six specific religious views. Those views are that

  1. Jesus Christ lived a sinless life;
  2. God is the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator of the universe and He stills rules it today;
  3. Salvation is a gift from God and cannot be earned;
  4. Satan is real;
  5. a Christian has a responsibility to share his/her faith in Christ with other people;
  6. and the Bible is accurate in all of its teachings."

Daily Discipleship Guide for 08-JUL-2010

Jesus' words telling the man not to go bury his father illustrates that those who commit themselves to be Jesus' followers must be prepared to be rejected by family and friends.  They must be willing to alienate even close relatives. In Matthew 10:34, Jesus says,

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.  For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's foes will be members of one's own household."    Following Jesus takes priority over even the highest of family responsibilities.  How far are you willing to take your faith? What has your faith cost you in your family relationships?

Jesus is named "the Prince of Peace" but also "the Lion of Judah," a God of power and purity, of strength and justice. As we follow him, we learn to care about the things he cares about:  love - the tenderness of grace and fairness – the hard reality of truth.  If you choose to follow Jesus closely and love the people he loves, and care about the things he cares about, you can expect to be treated the way he was treated, criticized by your enemies, and misunderstood by your friends.

On a scale of 1 (not willing at all) - 5 (I'll sacrifice all comfort and security), how willing are you to risk your earthly security and comfort?

Daily Discipleship Guide for 05-JUL-2010

Please read Matthew 8:18-22

This text is placed between a healing story and a miracle story.  Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law, talks about the difficulties of following him, then calms a storm.

In doing so, the gospel writer Matthew is giving us the hard to hear words sandwiched in between two accounts of words that give hope and comfort.

The Christian Life is like that too. We go through peaks and valleys --

What have been some peak times for you as a follower of Jesus?

How do those times strengthen you for the difficult times?

Daily Discipleship Guide for 24-JUN-2010

Sometimes, if we receive God's loving embrace fully, it means we have to become more responsible for ourselves and our journey with God.

Nouwen writes, "I cannot keep pointing to my father as an excuse for my life. I have to dare to stretch out my own hands in blessing and to receive with ultimate compassion (God's other) children, regardless of how they feel or think about me."

In telling this parable, Jesus makes it clear that the God of whom he speaks is a God of compassion who JOYOUSLY welcomes repentant sinners into his house.

  Since becoming the compassionate Father is the ultimate goal of the spiritual life, how are you doing at...

being like him.......

loving like him........

being compassionate like him.........

being generous like him..........
