Dear Annette,

It feels good knowing that someone is thinking of my family when I'm having trouble providing for them.  Timothy Thompson

There are over 50 Chattanooga families with a loved one participating in our Stephen's Table initiative in prison - and all are struggling to make ends meet. Thanksgiving shouldn't be depressing, and we are reaching out to you to add a little levity to the lives of the people we are serving by sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner.

In the past, we have invited people to drop off food at our office for Thanksgiving baskets.  However, most preferred to help by donating the cost of the the meal instead.  Therefore this year, we are just asking for the donation. One meal cost $35 but any amount will be warmly received and greatly appreciated.

Just point and click to make a donation and support our work during the holidays.

We will do the shopping, assemble the baskets and coordinate the volunteers to distribute them to our families. Each basket will also include a card with the following note:

This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself enough to be able to do this for someone else someday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you very much for your help and your continued support of our mission of second chances and the families we serve.

Thank you for supporting second chances at CEi,
Dempsey Signature

Invitation to all SCUMC Dads...

A few years ago, I attended a conference on the importance of fatherhood and being a good father. It was a worthwhile activity for me. Since then, I have received weekly emails from Fathers.com, a respectable organization which provides tips, encouragement and ideas to help one become a better dad.

From these emails, I read about the movie “Courageous,” out in theaters now. It is produced by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., the same group behind the movies “Facing the Giants” and“Fireproof” if you are familiar with those. This movie is supposed to have a very strong message for fathers.

I would love for a large group of dads from Signal Crest to go see this movie together. While I don’t think the movie will earn any Academy Awards for its production or acting, from what I have seen, we will go away from the theater with a new perspective on fatherhood, or at least, reaffirm what we are already doing as fathers or should be doing.

Let’s try this Wednesday night, Nov. 2. There is a 7:10 pm showing at Northgate Carmike 14 which would give you time to eat dinner at Wednesday Night Live if you'd like. There is a chance we could take the church microbus depending on the number of guys interested in participating.

Please send an email to jeffromero@epbfi.com if you would like to go and we will reply to you with a meeting place and time. Feel free to forward this to other men in the church who may not receive this email.

Here is a preview of the film:  http://www.courageousthemovie.com/

Thank you.

"Wipeout" this Weekend

If members or your family enjoy watching the ABC-TV game show “Wipeout,” Saturday is your chance to participate in similar teamwork challenges as well as help end childhood hunger.

For just $15, your family can attempt to tackle some messy and silly obstacles at the “Hunger Wipeout Obstacle Challenge.”

The event takes place this Saturday at the Chattanooga Area Food Bank with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Along with the obstacles are goofy games, entertainment booths, prizes and raffles and delicious food vendors.

Individual participants pay only $8. All proceeds go toward the fight against childhood hunger.

Planning Meeting Scheduled for Social Services Christmas Party

It’s time to plan Signal Crest’s annual Christmas party for children served by Signal Mountain Social Services. The party is scheduled for Saturday, December 3 at 10:30 a.m. and invitations are in the mail. Now someone needs to plan the party!

Volunteers from Signal Crest are going to meet on Sunday, September 18 at 5:00 p.m. in the carpeted Narthex to plan the Christmas party. There are a couple of volunteers already on board, but we can’t do it alone – we need help!

You are invited to become part of this wonderful ministry. It’s a great way to meet your fellow church members, the task to be done is not difficult, and the results will warm your heart. You do not even have to attend the party to help.

If you would like more information, call Sharon Dorough at 886-7677. We hope you will join us!

Everyone,

A gentleman in Walden has donated about 4 loads of split firewood to the ministry and we need to try to get it out of thier yard and delivered to a client by Sunday evening.  Most of this is oak, but some cherry also.  A small amount has not been split and will need to be dropped off at church.

PLEASE volunteer to help and call me.  Thanks.

It is Pumpkin Time on Signal Mountain!!

It is time to sign up to work the Pumpkin Patch for October 2011!  If you are not familiar with this fundraiser, it is the largest one that the Signal Crest Youth have all year long.  The youth sell pumpkins in our front lawn for the entire month of October and usually end up raising around $3,000.  It is definitely the event that carries us through each and every summer!  In order to make this happen, we need everyone at Signal Crest to be involved!  We ask that each of you consider taking a shift.  If we get each household on our schedule, then we won't have any spots left to fill!  Laura BeVille, one of our youth parents, is coordinating the pumpkin patch fundraiser for us this year and has created a public calendar online that you can use for reference.  Please click on the calendar link below, pick out your date and time, and then call her to let her know which one you want.  Pumpkins arrive on October 1st, so the sale will begin on October 2nd.  Please let us know if you have any questions!

High School Sunday School Teachers Needed!!

Hello Signal Crest!

I am on the search for a few more people to take on the high school Sunday school rotation this school year.  Each teacher takes an entire month and receives the lessons via email each week.  The lessons are from the LinC curriculum, which is published by Cokesbury.  It is a program that uses current events each week and applies them to scripture.  The youth love it!  It keeps them engaged and gives them a chance to learn how the goings-on of the world affect each of them.  The lessons come complete with introductory activities, hands-on activities, games, scripture, background on the current event of the week, and much more.  It truly is a ready-made lesson.  Everything is already done for you.  Please let me know if you would like to be a teacher!  I still need to fill in the months of December, March, April, and May.

You can email me at KRobertson@SignalCrestUMC.org or call the church office at 886-2330.

Blessings,
Kristin Robertson
