Save the Date: Upcoming Emmaus Walks

Dear SignalCrestians,

Here are the dates for upcoming "Walks to Emmaus".  If you're interested in going on one of these incredible weekend retreats (held at Camp Lookout), simply let me, or Rev. Annette know.  We'll be happy to talk to you about the weekend, answer questions, and introduce you to others in our congregation who have attended previous "walks."

Prayerfully yours,
Jason Luna

Your mission (should you choose to accept it)...

Please remember the Signal Mountain Social Services Food Pantry when you come to church this Sunday. Bring non-perishable food items or make a small donation in the special envelope you will find in the pew rack.

Thank you for your generous support of this mission in 2010. Because of the food you brought and the money you donated, SMSS was able to make a positive difference in the lives of many people in our community who need help at this time.

You Are Not Alone; the Kingdom of God is at Hand

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 08:10 AM PST

As we reach the midpoint of Advent this week, society is going crazy with the frenzy of preparations for Christmas. Perhaps, like me, you find the consumerism of Christmas overwhelming.

The thought of 450 billion dollars spent (in the U.S. alone!) trying to find the right gift for the person who already has everything is nauseating. That’s over twice as much as it would take to provide clean water for everyone on the planet, nine times as much as it would take to meet President Obama’s commitment to the Global Fund and double the rate of HIV positive people receiving treatment, and 450 times as much as it would take to erase the debt of over 20 low income countries (The Jubilee Act).

Left on our own we would be overwhelmed by the demands and pressures of this world. But the good news of Advent is that we are not to be left alone. Like it or not, the Kingdom of God is approaching. There is perhaps no simpler statement of Jesus’ mission than in Mark 1:15, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Help Send Kelley Woodard on a Young Life Mission Trip to Ethiopia

Hi all,

I want to let you know about an opportunity that we have this summer.  Through Young Life Africa Expeditions, Ruth Ann Steen and I have the priveledge of taking 15 WyldLife leaders on a mission trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  We will be taking "camp in a suitcase" to kids in Ethiopia and actually serrving kids there in a makshift Young Life camp.  I cannot wait.  We will be able to be with a great lady, Birtukan, that we stayed with o our trip to adopt Paulos.

In order to make this trip, our group has to raise about $60,000 (a large amount, but I know God will give us the means to raise it).

We have several fundraisers planned.  Here's how can you help:

  • Buy a Young Life wreath directly from me.  For every $25 wreath one of our group members sells, we get $10.  These are the same wreaths that are being sold in front of Pruetts, but the profit from those wreaths goes to the general YL fund.  So let me know if you would like a wreath!

  • Wednesday, December 15...come eat at McAlisters from 5-9.  The WyldLife leaderrs will be there to serve you and will be given a protion of the profits at the end of the night!!

  • Donate a pair of new or gently used shoes for us to share with the kids at camp.  Many of these kids do not own one pair of shoes!

If you would like to be a part of our fund raising ventures, please let me know!!

This is what is going on now.  Of course we would also gladly accept a donation to our trip if you so desire!

Thanks so much!!

Kelley Woodard

Do Your Duty; Bring Something Fruity

CHRISTMAS FRUIT

It is a long-standing Christmas tradition at SignalCrest to provide fresh fruit for the Christmas baskets distributed by Signal Mountain Social Services.

This year, baskets will be delivered to 52 families on the mountain.

Please bring apples, oranges, tangerines, tangelos, pears or grapefruit to the tiled narthex on or before Tuesday, December 7.

If you prefer, you can make a donation on Sunday, December 5 in the special envelope in the pew rack. We will use the money to complete our bags of fruit.

Thank you,

Parking Request for Wood Splitters

Please ask woodcutters to park in the upper part of the gravel parking lot on Saturday morning. We have the Christmas party for SMSS at 10:30 until noon. There will be around 150 people (and their vehicles) at the church for the party, plus tree sales in one part of the parking lot. We need to leave as many spaces free as possible in the upper paved lot close to the church for our guests.

Thank you!

Sharon

Hello everybody,

We need to get organized and get some wood split throughout December.  We have been delivering quite a bit and will run out of split wood by early December.  We plan on working the first three Saturdays of December; the 4th, 11th, and 18th.  On the 4th, we are having 2 shifts- the first from 8:30 to noon and the second from 1:00 to 4:30.  The other two workdays will be from 8:30 to noon.  If it is raining, we will not be working.

We have a lot of wood that needs to be cut into shorter lengths, so those with chainsaws will have a bunch of work.

We also need to deliver firewood to at least three houses.  If you have a truck and/or trailer and would like to deliver wood, please come and help this Saturday morning.

Thanks,

Jeff Simmons
